Coaching is more of a teaching moment for me than what I can do to guide my peers. This in part is my fortune of how talented and gifted they are. Diversity of perspectives, cultural nuances, different ways to solve known problems are a few aspects I do pick up. As a coach, I affirm to learn and understand their goals, help with accountability, detach my biases, and guide when possible.
This is my checklist which acts as a litmus test for my ability to coach my peers:
- Lead by example (ShuHaRi), one who can consistently:
- Learn
- Practice and master
- Evolve/Enhance (where possible)
- Ability to teach
- Apply VARK learning styles as appropriate:
- Visual
- Aural/Auditory
- Read/Write
- Kinesthetic
- Differentiate between when it's apt to listen or guide
- Approach each coaching session as learning
- Listen to understand
- Relentlessly dig deeper to the root-cause depending on receptivity.
- Hone in on recognizing the applicability of a solution to the problem at hand.
- Ability to detach from my biases, assumptions; be open-minded.
